This will allow me to find out more about your genre of writing, your line of research, your publishing deadlines and constraints and your target audience. My over twenty-five years of experience in this business have taught me that being able to put a face or voice to a client’s name makes all the difference!

This works both ways: clients, too, appreciate being able to ask questions about my credentials and to put a voice or face to the person to whom they are entrusting their writing—something which translation agencies cannot offer. I even seek to establish in-person meetings, provided that is feasible and warranted by the volume or complexity of the type of work.

We may also discuss aspects such as whether to get an external editor on board, whether you would like me to engage in teminological and contextual research, or if you’d like me to set up a style sheet or glossary specifically for your publications.

What’s next?

Following an initial meet-and-greet conversation, you email me your text, and I send you an offer. The latter will include the detailed, itemized price and the delivery date.

My rates are determined on a per-contract basis and will vary depending on the volume, the degree of difficulty of the text, the amount of terminology research required, whether an external editor is involved, and the desired or required turnaround time. At times I may charge by the word and at other times by the hour; on occasion we may also agree on a lump sum.

Unless you wish to renegotiate certain terms, you can then accept the offer and, voilà: I’ll begin digging into your text. In the concluding phase of the work, I generally require feedback from the author regarding outstanding issues. Expect eagle-eye comments such as “Please specify. Not clear.” This is included in the price and is factored into the determination of the delivery date. In other words, you will receive an initial version of the translation prior to the due date, allowing for time to collaboratively resolve final issues.

Subsequent contracts do not normally require phone or Zoom consults, although they can at times be helpful.

Clients receive invoices on the due date. Payments are due within 30 days.

Throughout the entire process, from negotiation to billing, clients feel comforted knowing that their work is in the hands of one and the same person whom they have direct and immediate access to—something which translation agencies cannot offer either. At the same time, I do collaborate with a professional language editor, whom I may engage to back-read some or all of my work, who is available to provide feedback on select issues and who helps me to stay abreast of the developments in the language industry.

Working with Cathleen Poehler Translations is a one-stop shop.

There are no intermediaries.
